We welcome Lindsay McLaughlin as the new executive director!

The Traverse City Track Club (TCTC) announces the hiring of Lindsay McLaughlin, who will succeed the retiring Lisa Taylor as the Executive Director for the successful non-profit, running-based organization. In the Executive Director role, she will provide leadership and vision for the organization in collaboration with its Board of Directors, and she will be responsible for the overall management and operations of the organization’s administration, programs, events, and activities.

Lindsay joins the TCTC after more than a decade in community engagement, law, and policy roles across public, private, and non-profit sectors. Her background includes service as an Outreach Director for a U.S. Senator, practice as a health industry lawyer, and service as a public health official during the pandemic. Most recently, Lindsay served as the inaugural Director of a new Bureau at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to reimagine behavioral health services for youth and their families in our state. Her extensive professional expertise in nonprofit administrative leadership, including development and successful implementation of strategic plans, oversight of multi-million dollar budgets and programs, and proven record of complex problem solving challenging public health and policy matters, will lend itself to contributing to the continued success of TCTC. She considers building and maintaining strong, genuine community partnership a cornerstone priority in her previous roles, and is eager to bring her expertise and learn from experienced track club and community members as well.

Furthermore, Lindsay has a lifelong passion for movement and fitness, serving as a yoga and fitness instructor since 2011. Lindsay unexpectedly fell in love with running after becoming a mom in the midst of the pandemic. She has since found running to be an essential part of both her physical and mental health, as well as an incredible activity for her whole family. In fact, the running, walking, and hiking trails around the Traverse City region were a significant factor for her family to relocate to the area. When not chasing her toddler or distance running husband around our incredible trails and Lake Michigan shoreline, you can find Linday practicing yoga or sweating at a HIIT class, upcycling old clothing to make t-shirts for her son, and embarking on a new adventure of starting Moondance Flower Farm on Old Mission Peninsula with her husband.

Lindsay grew up in Michigan and completed her undergraduate studies at Albion College. She earned her Juris Doctor and Master of Public Health from the University of Minnesota. Lindsay is also a Registered Yoga Teacher.

Lindsay currently resides on Old Mission Peninsula in Traverse City with her husband and son, and has been a TCTC member since they moved to the area in January 2023. She is eager to continue the TCTC’s proud tradition of community support and charitable giving, as well true inclusivity for folks of all abilities and stages of their running journeys.

Lindsay began her role on November 27th, 2023.

Celebrating its 42nd event this May 2024, the Traverse City Track Club’s signature Bayshore event and its partnerships have allowed TCTC, a 501(c)3 organization, to grant over $2.5 million in its five country area for projects and initiatives that facilitate active, healthy living.

The Traverse City area community has benefited from the Traverse City Track Club in many positive ways, including quality events and programs, safe places to be active, and support of area non-profits that relate to our running, walking, and health-focused mission.

TCTC Executive Director Transition and Search

The Board of Directors of the Traverse City Track Club (TCTC) announces Carie Wille will be stepping back from her role as Executive Director. She and her family will be moving out-of-state this fall as her husband accepted a new job in Wisconsin. Carie's last day will be October 13.

“It’s bittersweet to be sharing this news, especially after my relatively short time in this role. Leading and working for the Track Club has been an honor and privilege. The members' passions and the Board’s dedication to the stability and future of this organization is inspiring,” says Wille. “Life is full of difficult decisions, and this was one of those. I will be watching and cheering on the organization from across Lake Michigan as it moves forward.”

Following Carie's last day, Lisa Taylor, former Executive Director, will be stepping in as Interim Executive Director until the Executive Director position is filled. The Traverse City Track Club will continue to focus on offering quality programs for its nearly 1,000 members, hosting quality events for runners and walkers, maintaining strong community partnerships, and furthering its philanthropic efforts.

Her leadership approach was thoughtful and collaborative,” says Janice Beyer, President of the Traverse City Track Club Board of Directors. “Even in her short time, Carie has made meaningful contributions to the Club. Traverse City Track Club Executive Director Job Description

Carie Wille to Lead Traverse City Track Club as Next Executive Director

The Traverse City Track Club announces the hiring of Carie Wille, who will succeed the retiring Lisa Taylor as the next Executive Director for the successful non-profit, running-based organization. In the Executive Director role, she will provide leadership and vision for the organization in collaboration with its Board of Directors, and will be responsible for the overall management and operations of the organization’s administration, programs, events and activities.

“Carie’s strong community-based career background and professional experience will be an asset to our running club and its 800-plus local members from the five county area we serve,” said Janice Beyer, TCTC president. “I’m thrilled to welcome Carie to the TCTC family and know that our entire community will benefit from her passion for our club’s mission and core values," she added.

Wille comes to TCTC with extensive background in community and economic development where she has nearly 20 years of professional experience in relationship-building and community engagement across public, private, and non-profit sectors. Her positions as the Economic Development Manager for the City of Maple Grove, MN for four (4) years, preceded by seven (7) years as Community Development Director at the Cities of Princeton and Vadnais Heights, MN, align with the needs of the TCTC Executive Director position including: developing and implementing strategic plans; initiating and overseeing programs and events; grant proposal and policy writing; hiring, managing, and leading staff, consultants, and volunteers; providing recommendations and answering to a Board; managing finances and creating/monitoring budgets; providing public presentations and managing public relations; and creating content for and managing websites and social media accounts.

More recently, Wille is the founder and principal of Wille Consulting, LLC, of Traverse City, providing community and economic development consulting services.

Wille’s love of sport and running events began with her roots in Minnesota, where she was a runner on her high school’s state championship cross country team. Currently enjoying both social and competitive running as an adult, Wille recently earned third place masters prize money at the 2022 Bayshore Marathon Half, the TCTC’s most popular running event.

When she’s not running or pushing a jogging stroller, Wille enjoys free time with her husband and two young children embracing an active outdoor lifestyle including downhill and cross country skiing, spending time on the lake, waterskiing and hiking.

Wille earned her Master of Arts in Public Administration from Hamline University in St. Paul, MN and has completed numerous related courses and certifications during her career, including Profit Mastery and Grant Proposal Writing.
She currently resides in Traverse City with her husband and two young children, and has been a TCTC member since 2020.

Lisa Taylor had announced her plans to retire in September of 2022 at the end of her contract on December 31st, and will take on a consulting role for the club during Wille’s transition in the months ahead. Wille will begin on February 1st, 2023.

Lisa Taylor to Retire

The Board of Directors of the Traverse City Track Club (TCTC) announces the retirement of Executive Director Lisa Taylor, after 6 years of service to the organization. “It has been an honor to work with many of my friends and neighbors here in the Traverse City area to see more people being active through running and walking-based programs and events. It takes a community, and the Traverse City Track Clubs’ success is a direct result of the wonderful support we have received from our board, membership, runners, sponsors and the many partners in our community. I would like to thank all of them and encourage everyone in our region to continue to cultivate greater participation in the many running-based programs and events available here,” said Taylor.

Lisa will continue in her role as Executive Director through December 31, 2022. The Board has formed a search committee tasked with identifying our next Executive Director. A timeline including posting of the job description and qualifications and the application process will be announced following the October 11th board meeting.

Taylor is the first executive director of the Traverse City Track Club. She is a long-time resident of Traverse City. Since first joining the TCTC as a member in 1988, Taylor has been deeply involved in the Traverse City area running community, serving over 30 years as a cross country and track running coach, directing and creating running events and programs, and working in the health and wellness sectors. Under her direction, the TCTC has overseen the continued growth of the organization’s charitable giving program, and has guided the progress of the 501 c3 membership-based non profit’s events, programs, and charitable giving.

Most recently Lisa and the Traverse City Track Club Board of Directors have been developing the organization into a staff led organization, and have weathered the difficulties of the COVID-19 pandemic’s short term impact on event cancellations and the associated income reduction. With the return of the Bayshore 2022 event, Lisa and the board have restored the TCTC as a leading charitable giving organization in our area.

As Taylor steps away to enjoy some leisure time and more running, she has effectively set TCTC on the course for continued success. “In her six years at the Traverse City Track Club, Lisa has made significant and meaningful contributions,” said Janice Beyer, President of the Traverse City Track Club’s Board of Directors. “Under Lisa’s leadership, the Traverse City Track Club has forged strong relationships with key community partners and helped build a dedicated team of volunteers and members. From this solid foundation, the Traverse City Track Club will continue its important work with running and walking as part of a healthy lifestyle for future generations. We are tremendously grateful to Lisa for her hard work and commitment and wish her the very best as she enjoys a well-deserved retirement,” continued Beyer.

The Traverse City Track Club will continue to focus on delivering exceptional programs and events for runners and walkers and collaborative projects working closely with local and state entities, other non-profits and its over 800 members. Additionally, they will continue their work on long-term goals, including the maintenance and growth of its successful programs and events such as the Bayshore, one of the key resources Taylor helped sustain during the pandemic.

UPDATE: May 14, 2021

TCTC Programs, Events and Membership

TCTC’s ability to conduct in-person events is based on the criteria established under the orders of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services through our local health department.

Here’s the latest criteria:

In Michigan, capacity limits for businesses will lift two weeks after 65 percent of eligible residents have been vaccinated, and the gatherings and face mask order will end two weeks after 70 percent of eligible residents have been vaccinated.

Those who are vaccinated should pay attention to new guidelines which soon are expected to offer much more freedom both outdoors or indoors.

The current updated modifications to our activities are noted below:

Membership

To encourage membership at any time, the 2021 Membership application is open through October 31. The schedule allows a 10-month window to join or renew through October 31st, 2021. Most of the membership benefits still await, for only $15 per year.

In-Person Races and Activities Coming Back!

On a monthly basis, we receive a progress report from our medical director and we conduct activities and events using orders from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services through our local health department. Based on this, most of our outdoor programs and events, because of their size, are ready to go back to normal. We still remind members and participants to be conscious of each other’s safety and personal wishes.

UPDATE: January 25, 2021

TCTC Programs, Events and Membership

In a normal year for the Traverse City Track Club organization, our events, programs, and membership activities are funded almost entirely by profits from our well-managed TCTC Bayshore events.

While we presented many of our events and programs virtually or at a smaller capacity, we were also forced to cancel some of the membership programs that are possible because of Bayshore profit. It was a bummer and we hope for better times as the world begins to return to normal.

Here in Traverse City, the ability to conduct in-person events is based on the criteria established under the orders of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services through our local health department.

When it’s in the interest of the greater good, TCTC will not produce in-person events and programs unless we are certain that we have done our part to protect the safety and mitigated risk for our members, race participants and the greater Traverse City community. Further, we will not promote or support events and programs by other organizations that have not demonstrated that they are following basic safety and risk management guidelines.

The current modifications to our activities are noted below.

In-Person Races & Bayshore

As many are aware, we made an announcement December 31st about the cancellation of the 2021 in-person Bayshore Events. Regretfully, we must now offer either a deferral to the 2022 event, or a transfer to virtual Bayshore events. Registered participants have been and will be reminded often to select their option after logging in to their RunSignup account and the Bayshore event.

We continually review all available resources for conducting in-person events and work closely with experts to help us keep our community safe when we present our events and programs.

Virtual Frozen Foot Five Mile January 23-30, 2021

Our popular Frozen Foot event (circa 1983) is happening now as a virtual event. Registration is open through the 30th, and is FREE to 2021 members who have renewed for 2021.

Many answers to questions about Frozen Foot registration, and the virtual experience can be found on the event’s registration page at:

UPDATE: January 7, 2021

TCTC Programs and Events

Like runners everywhere, we miss seeing you on runs, at races, and programs. We are grateful we can still carry out our mission and have a strong membership that supports each other to stay active.

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented an undeniable challenge to produce in-person race events and programs. Hence the mass cancellation of events around the country – which is now extending into the late fall.

Here in Traverse City, the ability to conduct in-person events is based on the criteria established under the Governor’s directives and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services through local Health Departments.

One of the challenges of leadership is having to make difficult and/or unpopular decisions for the greater good. To that end, TCTC will not produce in-person events and programs in the current environment unless we are completely comfortable that we have done our best to protect the safety and mitigated the risk for our members, race participants and the greater Traverse City community. Further, we will not promote or support events and programs by other organizations that have not demonstrated that they are following basic safety and risk management guidelines.

The current modifications to our activities is noted below.

Our next scheduled event for TCTC is the Frozen Foot Five Mile on January 23, 2021

Our popular Frozen Foot event (circa 1983) has converted to VIRTUAL. Registration is open now and is FREE to 2021 members who have renewed prior to registration opening up on December 21, 2020.

Many answers to questions about Frozen Foot registration, and the virtual experience can be found on the event’s registration page at:

https://runsignup.com/Race/MI/TraverseCity/FrozenFootRace

Wednesday Fun Runs and Third Thursday Trail Runs

• Wednesday Fun Runs are announced on a week by week basis and are announced on the website and our Facebook.
• Third Thursday Trail Runs are announced month to month on the website and our Facebook page.

Other Programs and Events

We are continually reassessing how to efficiently offer the following under the most up-to date guidelines and orders:

• Celebrations/Socials/Awards
• Clinic Series Offerings

Reminder:
Social distancing and mask-wearing are the best defense in fighting the spread of this virus. Do your part to ensure the health and safety of those around you. Following are social distancing and hygiene practices.

• Wear a mask as guided
• Maintain at least 6-feet of separation from others (does not include members of your family who live with you)
• Wash your hands, or use hand sanitizer, before and after your run or walk
• No hugs, handshakes, high fives, or elbow bumps
• Regularly wash your hands in between your runs or walks
• Sneeze or cough into a tissue, handkerchief, or the inside of your elbow
• Don't pose together for selfies with those outside of the family who live with you
• If you feel any sign of sickness or illness, stay home
• If it seems overly busy where you intended to run or walk and it’s more congested than you are comfortable with, consider finding a different course/route/trail

long standing cancer-related fundraiser running/walking event, the recently re-branded “Good Fight 5K” Remembrance Run, has converted to a virtual event.

This year’s event won’t be an in-person gathering, but will still call on participants of all ages and abilities to join the “fight” from wherever they are — on every sidewalk, track and trail.

With a virtual run/walk, participants can safely complete a 5K run/walk while observing physical distancing. Participants register, print their participant bib (optional), run or walk the prescribed distance at the location/course of their choice, submit their results online and receive their race package in the mail (finisher medal, swag).

It seems as though things are headed in the right direction and while most of Michigan remains in Phase 4 of the 6 phase MI Safe Start plan, we remain in the less restrictive Phase 5. But, remember - this isn’t the end of the journey; and, things are not back to normal.

TCTC PROGRAMMING - ON HOLD THROUGH APRIL 30

We are grateful for the excellent guidance we are receiving from the RRCA, the governing body of running clubs in the nation, and we are continuing to closely monitor communications from the Grand Traverse County Health Department and other health organizations to ensure we are informed and following guidelines as this fluid situation continues to evolve.

We are also grateful for how YOU, and all of our leaders are being excellent role models and following all recommended procedures and protocol guidelines for safe running during the COVID-19 pandemic.

https://www.rrca.org/news-articles/news-archives/2020/03/15/advice-for-rrca-members-running-coaches-and-club-leaders

Our members are supporting each other in many safe ways, including sharing great motivating messages, producing live Facebook running-related learning sessions, and sharing a variety of “how-to” links for everything from runner recipes, to how to participate in virtual events.

Our fun run leaders and our training leaders are staying in touch, and constantly reminding us of both of our responsibility to carry out safe practices as runners, as well as sharing uplifting stories of the unique and positive ways we are dealing with this dilemma while missing each other through running.

Continuing today, we will be following the CDC and State of Michigan recommendations to limit, cancel, or postpone non-essential gatherings. Therefore, the following programs will be suspended through at least April 30:

· Weekly Wednesday Fun Runs

· Third Thursday Trail Runs

· Bayshore Winter Training Saturday Group Runs

These non-essentials will be reassessed again starting April 30th.

As always, we wish you the best with your continued running and hope that you enjoy the calming value from this wonderful personal endeavor. Thank you for your support, and we look forward to running with you again later this spring.
